Lead Front End Developer | Williams Lea | Remote

About the Role

Williams Lea is seeking an experienced Lead Front End Developer to join its dedicated Web Development Team within the Technology function. This is a 3‑month fixed‑term contract (with potential to extend), offering a salary of £70,000–£80,000 per year plus benefits.

This is a fully remote role, working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday (9am–6pm, with a 1‑hour unpaid lunch). You will lead front‑end development for a UK public sector department project, working in an Agile environment to deliver robust, high‑quality web applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement robust front‑end web applications according to specifications and user stories.
  • Capture and document customer requirements, transforming them into design specifications.
  • Write structured, well‑documented code to deliver scalable solutions.
  • Conduct cross‑browser compatibility testing and ensure accessibility compliance (WAI, WCAG, ARIA).
  • Implement responsive design and usability best practices.
  • Liaise with senior project stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Produce detailed technical design documentation and estimates.
  • Implement unit tests (BDD/TDD) and ensure code coverage.
  • Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies to complement solutions.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years’ experience in front‑end development.
  • Strong knowledge of JavaScript (ES6/ES2015), jQuery, HTML5, CSS3.
  • Experience with CSS pre‑processors (Sass, Less).
  • Knowledge of Python.
  • Familiarity with Gulp, Webpack, and Git.
  • Experience with accessibility and usability standards.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and across multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.

Desirable Skills

  • TypeScript.
  • Drupal development (configuration, theming, module development).
  • Django and PHP.
  • MySQL.
  • API integrations (REST/GraphQL).
  • Apache server configuration and Linux knowledge.
  • AWS cloud hosting.
  • XSLT/XPath.
  • Continuous Integration (Jenkins).
  • Photoshop/Fireworks for design and wireframing.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Client‑facing support experience is an advantage.
