Monash University Research Scholarships 2027 in Australia for Masters and PhD Students

If the 31 October round applies to you, there are under four weeks left to apply. Monash University in Melbourne runs several scholarship rounds a year for people starting a research Master's or PhD, and international students can apply alongside Australians. Check the round dates below straight away, because the round you apply in matters.

These scholarships support graduate research, not coursework degrees. Awards are based on academic record, research output and prior research experience, and competition is intense. Monash says it offers over 300 stipend-paying scholarships a year, and you're considered for them when you apply for admission, without a separate scholarship form.

One point many "fully funded" listings skip: a living stipend and a tuition-fee award are separate things, and international students don't automatically get both. The next section explains how that works.

About Monash University

Monash is a public research university based in Melbourne, Australia, and a member of the Group of Eight, Australia's research-intensive universities. Its research scholarships are run centrally through its Graduate Research office and are open across the university's faculties.

Who Can Apply

  • Open to: Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents, Australian humanitarian visa holders and international students.
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree (per the listing). Monash also says you must meet its minimum academic entry standards for the research degree.
  • English: You must meet Monash's English language requirements.
  • Selection: Scholarships are competitive and awarded on academic record, research output and prior research experience.

The headline says "all nationalities", but the reality is narrower. Any nationality can apply, but there's no guarantee of funding, since you're ranked against a large field. Only around 70 international scholarship winners a year are also offered a fee award covering tuition. Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents don't pay research tuition under a government fee offset, so they only need to apply for a stipend.

Eligible Study Fields

Monash lists research degrees across these areas:

  • Arts, Design and Architecture
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Business
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Law
  • Medicine
  • Nursing and Health Sciences
  • Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Science

Financial Benefits

Confirmed by Monash:

  • A living allowance (stipend). The Research Training Program (RTP) stipend is AUD $37,145 a year at the 2026 rate.
  • A relocation allowance, if you're eligible.
  • A tuition-fee award for about 70 international winners a year. This is the Monash International Tuition Scholarship (MITS).

Types of scholarship the listing mentions: the RTP scholarship, which is Australian Government funded, the Monash Graduate Scholarship, the Maxwell King PhD Scholarship, the Monash Silver Jubilee PhD Scholarship, the Raydon Graduate Research Scholarships for Humanities and Social Sciences, and MITS.

Not confirmed: Some third-party listings, including the source for this post, also claim the awards cover airfare, books and course materials, and Overseas Student Health Cover. I couldn't confirm any of these on the Monash pages I checked, so don't budget around them. Read your offer's terms and the stipend rates page before you plan your finances.

Documents Required

The listing doesn't give a document list. Monash says you apply through its online portal at the same time as your course application, and you don't choose specific scholarships because you're considered for all that are available.

Programme and Application Details

  • Level: Master's by Research and PhD (Doctoral) degrees
  • Location: Monash's Australian campuses, mainly Melbourne
  • Coverage: Stipend for the 300-plus winners, plus a fee award for about 70 international winners
  • Rounds and deadlines: There are four rounds a year. Monash's own pages mention a 31 October round, and the 2027 Round 1 closing date was still being confirmed. The listing quotes 28 February 2027 and 31 August 2027, which I couldn't confirm, so check Monash's current round dates before you rely on any of them.
  • Results: Outcomes come out about six to ten weeks after the relevant round closes.

Round dates apply to Monash's Australian campuses only. Its Malaysian and Indonesian campuses run separate scholarships.

How to Apply

  1. Check you meet Monash's English language and minimum academic entry standards.
  2. Submit your course application through Monash's online portal at monash.edu/graduate-research/study/apply, within an open scholarship round. You're automatically considered for the scholarships available.
  3. You can only submit one application per scholarship round, so make sure it's complete before you submit.

Aim to apply in the earliest round you can finish properly. Admission assessment for new students usually starts after scholarship results are released, so a weak application costs you a round.
