The Martingale Foundation is offering fully funded postgraduate scholarships for 2027 entry to students pursuing Master's or PhD study in Mathematical Sciences or Artificial Intelligence at partner universities across the UK. The scholarship is aimed specifically at academically strong students from lower-income backgrounds who might otherwise struggle to fund postgraduate research.
Beyond covering tuition and living costs, scholars get application support, leadership training, and ongoing membership in the Martingale research community — support that extends well past the funding itself.
About the Scholarship
The Martingale Foundation Scholarship exists to help talented students facing financial or social barriers pursue postgraduate research in the UK. For 2027 entry, funding is limited to selected Master's and PhD courses in Mathematical Sciences and Artificial Intelligence at Martingale's UK partner universities. Applications are assessed on financial need, academic potential, and genuine motivation for research.
Eligible Study Fields
Mathematical Sciences, including:
- Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Theoretical Mathematics
- Mathematical research and related mathematical science subjects
Artificial Intelligence, including:
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science
- AI research, Human-Inspired AI, Data-intensive science, Scientific computing
Who Can Apply
- Achieved, or on track to achieve, a First or Upper-Second Class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
- Eligible to start a Master's or PhD programme in the UK from September 2027
- Must qualify for Home Fee status at a Martingale partner university
- Must have attended school in the UK or Ireland for at least 3 years between ages 11–18, or at least 7 years between ages 4–18
- Completed GCSEs (or equivalent) at a state-funded school, or received a scholarship/bursary covering at least 90% of fees at a fee-paying school
- Have faced, or currently face, genuine financial barriers — Martingale generally uses a household income of £45,000 or below as one key indicator
Important: although the listing states "all nationalities" are eligible, the Home Fee status and UK/Ireland schooling requirements mean this scholarship is effectively aimed at students with an existing UK or Irish education background and residency connection, not applicants applying fresh from overseas.
